The Name

The Tidbit envelope has arrive at my snowy and cold door step in Michigan from warmer Atlanta!  Thank you Cheryl for sending it my way!
I'm going to start my first post on something very personal to me.  My name.
My maiden name is Patricia Carol Gerhardstein. That's 25 letters in case you were wondering.  It was and is a very long name, especially when you are a child trying to fit it on a little line when filling out information for school! I never minded my first or middle names, but that last name....that was a doozy, and 100% German.  No one could ever pronounce it or spell it, and to add a little aggravation to the situation, my family dropped the middle syllable and pronounced it "Gerstein".  Not Gerstein, like grrrrstein, but Gearstein, like a gear.  Is this clear, LOL?!  When telling my name to strangers, I always included all three syllables!

Later in life as a young married, I commented to my Mom how glad I was to shed that name and take on the simpler name of Trent.  I thought she would be in agreement with me, especially since most of the time, she wasn't that fond of my Dad!  NOPE.....she told me in no uncertain terms how much she loved that name. She went on to say it was a strong name, one that represented generations of hardworking people and that she was very proud of it.  Wow, I had been an immature example of seeing through a glass darkly!  I no longer looked on the superficial concerning my name, and to this day, I see clearly about its impact on who I am.

There is great importance in a name.  Ask any one who doesn't like theirs.   In the Bible it says in 1Samuel 25:25 "May the lord pay no attention to that wicked man Nabal.  He is just like his name - his name is Fool, and folly goes with him:"  I wouldn't suggest Nabal for a name.  It also says in Ecclesiastes 7:1 " A good name is better then fine perfume.

What is the name above all names?  The precious name of Jesus!  At the very name of Jesus every knee shall bow (Philippians 2:10).  There is power in the name of Jesus, even the demons submit in His name. (Luke 10:17).   He has been given power over everything!
I close this post with a scripture written on our hearts, the scripture that assures us of the importance of His holy name.
Acts 4:12 (NIV)
"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men which we must be saved".

AMEN sister! I too, had a doozey of a name as a child, Constance Sabrina McConnell. In a sea of Debbies, Lindas, Marys and Dianes, I felt like an oddball! At least Connie didn't sound as high falootin' as Constance! My name is actually pronounced the German way (Kuhn-stahn-ze) but that would have been heck for me as a kid! Now as an adult, I simply love my name! I try to go by Constance (Americanized) whenever the opportunity arises.

Jesus name was pregnant with meaning, and so are the referneces to Him. My favorite is Lion of Judah!
Connie/Constance/Kuhn-stahn-ze

Back in the 70s, Jim Croce recorded a song "I've Got A Name". I always loved that song because my Maw McDonald had told me for years about my heritage and about where the McDonalds from which I am descended came from. My great, great grandfather McDonald was an Irish Baptist minister, as well a blacksmith. Tracing that line has been difficult because he moved around a lot. However, through my Maw (who was a Newland prior to marrying my Paw McDonald), I came to understand the adversities he faced as a Protestant minister even in America. Most Irish people who migrated to America were Catholic and had no time or use for the Protestants. That is not a modern day problem, it has existed for centuries in Ireland. His ancestors migrated to Ireland from Scotland and many of their people were massacred by the English in the Scottish Highlands. After hearing her stories, I was acutely aware of what a proud name I bore and of the importance of knowing where one comes from. I see bearing the name Christian as the same thing. It is a name for which untold numbers have proudly given their very lives, the first being our Savior. Yes, I've got a name. I wear it proudly because it identifies me with my Savior on the one hand and with countless thousands who have shed their blood to uplift that name and protect that name over the centuries! I loved this post and I love you my sister!

Names are indeed important. when my daughter was born I had it all figured out already. Two first names after her two grandmothers, a middle name after Icelandic costume, Gunnarsdatter ( meaning Gunnar´s daughter), and Ljung after me and my father´s family. I felt so insecure about how long I was going to live, but her name was meant to root her and give her an identity no matter what.

On my passport, even on my FB profile is Christian written as a part of my identity. Follower of Christ, saved by Christ, by his grace alone.

My heritage on my mother's side is interesting in that half of my grandmother's siblings (totaling 15) decided to change one letter from an "o" to an "a" --so for years, until last year when we finally disbanded and broke into smaller groups - at our family reunion was the "Sarbo / Sorbo Reunion" ...you can imagine what a crummy thing that was when as coordinator of the reunion for several years, one year I wanted to have shirts printed for us all. So if you're a descendant you knows that SORBO is correct (which it IS- that's my family!) you have to sport a shirt that says SARBO?? Uck. lol Seriously - it has been a point of contention in my family for years. Which way is correct....trust me...countless hours researching my genealogy has proven the O wins!! ;)

oh what a study this would be on the names in the bible and their meaning!

the meaning of patricia is NOBLE
the meaning of carol is CHAMPION
now how about that miss a patty?...your mama knew what she was doing when she named you patricia carol and you know what, eh?..i don't do too bad either because the meaning of patty is LADY!!!..........and that is one noble champion lady that i dearly love!!...love terry

Well, my maternal grandmother was a hoot changing up her name from Catherine Donna Melcher (a German last name) to Donna Kay.

I have always liked my first name but not my middle name Ellen. Ellen is the English variant of the Greek name Helen. Being raised Catholic, we were named after saints.

Catherine Ellen aka Mrs. Mac

My name is Patricia Louise...Growing up I did not like Louise, not one little bit! But, I wear it proudly now, for I am named after both my Daddy and Mama's older sisters...it too was their middle names. I love family names, handed down through the ages. But Child of Christ is the best name of all...What a lovely name.

Rebecca Anne Leto Mara
"Rebecca" Biblical name means- servant of God.
"Anne" Biblical means - Grace.
"Leto" Greek Goddess, Mother of Artemis & Apollo.
"Mara" Biblical, means - Bitter.
So, in short, I'm a grace giving servant of God. And was a goddess that married into a river of bitterness. WOW
The only heritage of my maiden name is they left Palermo, arrived in New York and moved south. I did, however, find the name in the pages of a roster on Ellis Island. The Mara name has a long history of stories of O dropping to get help for food way back in the day...
ps, I was named Rebecca before my Dad got to the hospital. He was going to name Sally Anne, after him-Salvatore. Thanks Mom!

I've always hated my real name, I think when I get the tidbits box I will write about my name too...

And Margie... that my mom chose to spell like "marjee" so no one says it correctly. Do you know people warn others to call me by my correct pronunciation? Oh good gravy...

and what do I do... i name my daughter Phyllis... not popular... but I love it!
