(His eye is on the sparrow. Can you spot the bird's nest and the open moth of the baby bird at the top my my Mom's rose tree?)
Exodus 20:
8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord
your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or
daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any
foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy."
Hannah celebrating the Sabbath.
Today I thought I'd try to explain a bit of Norwegian traditions and attitude about keeping The Lord's Day holy. I feel we live and think differently from the Americans about this, culture-wise.Hannah celebrating the Sabbath.
Since Norway was Christened in year 1030 by St. Olav, the country has been ruled according to the ten commandments and those of Jesus in N.T.. It has been easy, because the people shared the same faith. In my time, the last 30 years or so, things have changed radically and the laws of my beloved country with it.
A story about St. Olav. It was Sunday, but he sat carving with his knife on a piece of wood . A young servant saw this and said cautiously, "It's Monday tomorrow, Lord King." Whereupon the king took the wood shaves and burnt them in the palm of his hand.
The ancient St. Olav church just over at the island. The myth says that when the even older obelisk touches the wall, Domesday will come.
My mother was very accurate about keeping the Sunday holy. She would never even knit on a Sunday. If she and my Dad went for a hike in the mountains, she would never gather berries and carry them home on a Sunday. In the evening they would go to church, but my Mom would always go directly home afterwards. She used to say, if the sermon was good, she needed quiet to hold on to what she had gotten.
I used to go for walks with my friends after church. We discussed and had a great time. There are of course more than one way.
Now the laws and the spirit of our country have changed. Churches are closing down. Some gather for church coffee after worship, some even have opened restaurants. When I grew up neither radio or TV would send sports events till after worship time on Sunday.
There actually still are fines to be paid if one disturb the Holy Day peace. That is you aren't allowed to move your lawn, build a house or make disturbing noises to the neighborhood. Neither must the fishermen nor the farmers work outdoors for 24 hours.
Most shops are closed, so are banks, factories e.t.c.
Even hospitals run about half staffed on Sundays. So do buses, trains and ferries. No serving of alcohol till after church time on restaurants.( Church time being from11a.m. till 12.30 a.m.
There are signals that these laws too are about to be changed. That all the seven days of the week are to become regarded the same. That will be a great loss for our country. We are in deep of need the peace and inner tranquility of a "resting day," which is the Norwegian expression for Sunday. "Keep the Resting Day Holy", the commandment says. We need to seek the Lord.
Remembering the words of Jesus in Mark 2:
27 Then he said to them
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
I see this as, we need the Sabbath for our own good, and not only to fulfill the law. The Lord's Day is holy, but it's also a day of recreation and meditation, free from hard work and labor. We so easily forget that until recently the population were forced to work from early morning till late night 6 days a week.
It was a blessing to the ordinary people to have one day off. It was a unique opportunity to go to church first and then rest with ones family, either out or indoors.
Saturday afternoon the church bells rung the Holy Day in. They still have that tradition in Sweden. People took off their working clothes and put on Holy Day outfits.
When I grew up I had not much clothes, but I had clothes for playing, clothes for school and Sunday clothes.
It had to do with paying respect.
Naomi and Hannah watching the sun go down close to our home.
About a year ago Gunnar and I were the lucky hosts of two young Canadian Jewish girls, Hannah and Naomi. They celebrated their conservative Sabbath with us. It was an awakening experience.
Not only because the rules they did follow, but because of the devotion with which they celebrated the Sabbath.
I felt my kitchen was holy ground as the candles were lit and we shared the meals. Songs from the Book of Psalms and reading from the Scripture. I think the two girls song for one or two hours, while the candles were burning. The clean voices, the musicality, the adoration, the joy. I didn't get the impression there was any sacrifice in their Sabbath celebration, only holy joy. Everything was prepared on before hand, lots of tasty dishes. Including family gatherings with relaxed eating and conversations were a main part of the Sabbath in addition to the Holy sermons.
Gunnar telling about the druids who worshiped the sun here between the mainland and the island long before Christ.
Once more I thought, how much my generation has lost and failed to hand further to our up-growing descendants.
Like Serina just said, when I told what I was writing about, "but we don't live this way, Mama".
I just need to make some changes.
The narrow path leading to the local light tower. Let's pray that Christ and his light must reign and remain shining among us. That no wayfarer must get astray.
Thanks for walking this stretch of the narrow road with me. It's time for the sock to move on.

Felisol, I have had a quiet day to myself and have been on and off writing on my own blog and here on the Sister's blog reading your posts and your beautiful words have filled empty places in my heart. In reading this, it does make one hunger for the days when the Sabbath was considered holy or at least more holy than it is now....I can remember, back in the day, when stores, restaurants, etc were closed on the Sabbath here in the US..it was during my youth and I honestly cant remember when it changed. There are many things about our world that we will probably never see again or be able to change, but we can and must still live them in our heart...and it is there when Jesus finds us anyways....Love you Felisol. I enjoyed your sock adventures and lovely posts.
Dear Donna,
My thoughts and prayers are with the sisters this night.
I know so many are battling, but never, never alone.
You see through what I have written and set words to my intentions.
(If I ever had any conscious intention. I felt more like not posting before I went to bed.)
The way our Jewish guests were able to celebrate midst a to them in a secular society, and my daughters remarks to me. "You don't do this", were timely reminders to myself; I need to change the way I act in my home.
I pray each morning after breakfast, pray the Lord to bless the day and the people we love, and also the ones we do not manage to love fully. I pray out loudly, and Gunnar will often add a sentence or two.
Of course I can do more.
I know Jesus will show me the road, when I only a, willing to go. If I cannot change society, I can with his help change my ways of living in my own home.
Yes .. we can all do our part to not let the Sabbath slip from our homes as it has in society. This is a most beautiful post. I do not think this was the intention of our ancestors nor in our country, our founding fathers. You know the passage about a little leaven? Or the 'one bad apple spoils the whole basket' .. we have let such rottenness spoil the bunch (our nations). Then too, this is prophesied about a great falling away in the end times .. so this we must remember too. What a wonderful post to awaken and remember how the past leaves a shadow on the path of today. We really need more than just a shadow.
you always share wonderful points ... i will be rereading more carefully the ones you posted here ... just wanted to encourage you with a big HUG and blessings in the days ahead!!!
I can feel the tranquility in this post....in the US...our quest to make all things equal has robbed us of a time set aside to simply rest....it is so needed in this world...the gentleman who fathered our National Park system was a depressed and tormented person...he only found Peace in natural settings...he would go into the wilderness of our nation and just be there..for weeks and even months on end when he was having the hardest time....meditation, reflection, sharing with his family....and finding Peace... today we take so little time to feed our inner man. No wonder our world is so depraved and restless...
So beautiful how Norway has tried to keep a Resting Day...
dear felisol...i enjoyed walking this narrow road with you this early tuesday morning....i remember that people used to call us narrow minded about such things as keeping the first day of the week[the lords day] holy but i just thought that of course we are narrow minded just because we are the narrow way of the path to heaven, right off the broad way!
i wanted to come here sooner dearest felisol but i must tell you that my lords day was so busy that i had to get someone to pick up my sunday school kids and i wasn't able to even go to sunday morning worship or to sunday evening gospel.
keeping my eye on bernie and mom golden between friday and saturday just exhausted me!..with mom goldens' trip to the doctor in niagara falls, she came home with eye drops, one to be put in every two hours and one to be put in every six hours.
i know that the lord jesus understood because he did say one time....Luke 6:7
And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.
Luke 6:6-8 (in Context) Luke 6 (Whole Chapter) Other Translations
Luke 6:9
Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?
well poor mom golden surely needed looking after...her eye was so bad that the infection had started to spread further into her eye....she was getting a small ulcer there even and.she was in danger of losing her sight....thanks to god she has gotten better..she must take the drops until friday.
felisol, when we were children there were very few corner stores opened on the sabbath...i remember when we lived in my beloved manitoba that one time between the worship meeting and sunday school that betty, i and another sunday school kid went to a corner store and bought a big bag of cookies and as we were gobbling them down like three little piggies one of the older ladies saw us and scolded us. "you children should be ashamed of yourselves shopping on the lords day!"..i have never forgotten this felisol ..of course we laughed at her old fashion way but when i got older, i totally agreed with her...her name was mrs. peacock...to this day i feel bad that we were so impudent.
in canada everything is wide open now on the lords day..it used to be that even transport trucks were not allowed to run on a sunday.
i am not sure about the hotels but i do know that all the restaurants and grocery stores and the malls are wide open.
felisol, bernie and i both looked high and low at the rose bush and we couldn't fine that little birdie...could you give us a hint?
it is true felisol that the usa and canada have gotten away from the truth of the ten commandments...in school we were required to memorize them, memorize the "love" verses in corinthians , both psalm 23 and psalm 100, but since the bible and god have been removed from the public schools, the only children allowed this great privilege are the catholic students in the catholic schools.
felisol, when we have traveled the states, we used to love it so much as we drove through the bible belt of that great country...so many hymns playing on the radio, almost every station..too bad the people wouldn't listen to this gospel and turn to the lord, eh?...the lord jesus who is not willing that any should perish!
well bernie is sound asleep, dad golden is keeping his eye on mom golden and i think that because of you and the sisters prayers for me that i am going to have a good night sleep......thanks for being the sock sister for a week felisol and thanks for all your good and godly posts...you are a blessing....love terry
ps..what a privilege that the lord gave to you, sending those precious jewish girls to bless your home for a short while...i do believe that you will never forget this my dearest friend....
Dearest Terry,
about going to bed in the early morning.
I'll make Gunnar fond a better picture of the birds. They were near the three white flowers.
The Jewish girls came, because I got to know their aunt Leora while I was busy with Ruby Tuesday.
They stayed for a week end and I learned more than I thought possible. A gift from the Lord.
We can hold Sabbath, even if the world don't-
It all depends on us.
Hope you are doing better and taking naps whenever you can.
Ephesians 5: 16 "Redeeming the time, because the days are evil."
The old Norwegian Bible says, "Buy the convenient time."
I find that a good expression.
Such a wonderful journey with you and the socks. ....I think we should find a time to have a chat on Skype....I so enjoyed speaking with you the last time....and would love to connect again. I will ask the Lord to arrange a time when we both are rested and able to sit and not be interrupted so we may share our hearts! And thank you...for all your many prayers you have prayed on my behalf...who would have thought that the Lord would have someone halfway around the world praying for me?....God is go good - His grace still amazes me. ...I have loved your posts, Elise...may the Lord bless you - from head to foot - and fill you with strength - and take away your pain....sending you a hug!
Dearest Deb, I agree. God is good, God is Love.
Deut. 32:4 "He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he."
If we only could rest in that.
I find it hard sometimes, and I also keep praying for healing, help and justice.
I find that to comforting that the Lord, even perfect and almighty, wants us to come to him with every little problems and also with our praise.
I also find it wonderful to have my caring, praying sisters all over the world. The chosen few. I know the Lord has put us together for a purpose, maybe more. One for certain is praying and sharing.
And yes, I'd love to Skype once more with you, and with Olivia too. She is a heart stealer.
We shall see, the Lord knows our needs and will help us find a way.
