BEING REAL

Our sisterhood is a fun bunch and we know how to laugh and make each other giggle. Whether it's talking about mismatched socks, menopause or any other off the wall thing that pops into our heads, our hearts are united. Every single one of us in this special sisterhood has had to deal with their own hurts and heartaches. I love about being a part of this group. For me personally, when I was dealing with my Mom's terminal cancer and planning her funeral and simultaneously dealing with Dave's unexpected cancer diagnosis and his surgery, y'all were here for me! Your words of encouragement, prayers and cards have lifted me up during my darkest times. Our wonderful pastor reminds us all the time that God created us for relationship. Though I have only met face to face with one of the sisters (Cyndi), you could put me in a crowded room with a blindfold on and my heart would gravitate to each and every one of you! Only God knew what this group would come to embody and the impact we would make!

I used to think that life sailed along with an occasional pot hole here and there but now I realize that life is an ongoing journey of detours and road construction. The smooth sailing is more the exception than the rule. I despise traffic, it seems like such a waste of my time to sit in this stop and go, barely advancing line of cars and usually I find myself irritable and thinking, "Someone else's lack of consideration and selfishness has inconvenienced SO many people!" Yeah, not a lot of compassion, grace or mercy! I am JUST as selfish thinking of how this inconveniences ME!
Last night, the socks and I attended the new Bible Study at our church titled, "UNGLUED". Right from the get go I realized I am going to have my work cut out for me! The author points out that we are to be making imperfect progress. Then she makes a bold statement, "How you react, impacts your reach". I am a reactor, so much so you could probably hang one of those hazardous signs on my back to warn people ahead of time that you need to watch out for "fallout". Most days I am pretty good but other days, I don't care who is on the receiving end of my tirade!
Just a couple of days ago, I was at LOWES and because Dave has been a defensive driving instructor for the BNSF Railway, we have had the importance of backing into our parking spaces stressed repeatedly! (For the record, those couple of extra seconds that it takes, reduces your likelihood of backing into someone or being hit as you back out of your own parking space.) The key to backing into your parking space however is that you need to leave yourself enough room so that you can load your stuff into the back of your vehicle. I came out of LOWES with a bulky ceiling fan in my cart and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that some HUGE, honkin', diesel truck had extended WAAAY into my space right next to my bumper!! Yup, NUCLEAR FALLOUT!!! As I wrestled and wrangled that ceiling fan into the back of my car I manged to write the nastiest mental note known to man!! After parking my cart, I grabbed my notebook and wrote a note to the owner of the truck. As I grabbed the door handle to get out of my car and put the note underneath the windshield wiper, the Holy Spirit checked me. Don't you hate it sometimes when He does that? As idiotic as it sounds, sometimes I just WANT to be angry! However, I have learned the value of being obedient to the Holy Spirit's leading and I wadded up my piece of paper and drove off. Did I have a legitimate gripe, absolutely! Did I have the right to spill "written vomit" all over another person, ummm NO, I do not! "Imperfect progress" at it's best! It would be great to have the Jesus-appropriate response first but as I said, I have my work cut out for me!
This week we received the news that Dave's 3rd and final lab workup indicates that his cancer has returned somewhere. He will begin radiation as soon as we get the details ironed out. How did I react? Not so good! I thought we had licked this thing and it was behind us, after all, Dave IS my Superman! Once again I feel like our future is threatened; being someone that God had to heal from all of their insecurity issues, this feels like regression to me. I truly believe that God has me in this new Bible Study for a reason. As we read over King Jehosophat's response to the armies marching against him, he employed a bold tactic. Rather than sending out his version of Army Rangers or Navy Seals, he sent out the equivalent of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir!!!! Singers went out before them, singing the Lord's praises and shouting of His unending faithfulness to His people! I can't help but think of God inhabiting the praises of His people and how that makes all the difference in how we either REACT or IMPACT.

My time with the sock adventure has come to a close. The Texas sock will be making an appearance next week, watch for it in the mail! Love you all!

I think we must always bring each moment before the Lord before we react .. however, sometimes our minds are just too much in a hurry to listen. This sounds like a wonderful Bible study you have begun. May the Lord 'tame' our tongues, spirits and actions. Hugs,

I am such a react er too... though I have made huge progress over the years...still it is my first response. I know I would not deal well with the news of cancer returning either....by God's help you and Dave will weather this latest storm. Stop and Go traffic is the rule rather than the exception but it has taken me a long time to realize it...and like you, I dislike it immensely! However I think God is all about the journey with the destination only a small part of the equation....our destination is set anyway since we belong to Him....its how we live and love and grow along the way that makes all the difference. I have enjoyed your Sock adventure...:) Love you, Sister

leo and i are praying for you both ... with leo's chronic pain entering it's 30th year, we understand uncertainties and fears that life brings ...

just this morning i read something very encouraging written by george mueller - here is a portion, to hopefully encourage you both ... love, saija

"Hope thou in God." Oh, remember this: There is never a time when we may not hope in God. Whatever our necessities, however great our difficulties, and though to all appearance help is impossible, yet our business is to hope in God, and it will be found that it is not in vain. In the Lord's own time help will come.

Oh, the hundreds, yea, the thousands of times that I have found it thus within the past seventy years and four months! When it seemed impossible that help could come, help did come; for God has His own resources. He is not confined. In ten thousand different ways, and at ten thousand different times God may help us.

Our business is to spread our cases before the Lord, in childlike simplicity to pour out all our heart before God, saying, "I do not deserve that Thou shouldst hear me and answer my requests, but for the sake of my precious Lord Jesus; for His sake answer my prayer, and give me grace quietly to wait till it please Thee to answer my prayer. For I believe Thou wilt do it in Thine own time and way."

Reaction.........oh my heavens, I have lived the queen of that little kingdom! It ruined my health, stole my inner peace, splashed venom all over the people that I love the most and turned my joy into depression. One fine day, the Lord took me aside and told me in no uncertain terms how dishonorable I was, how unholy my attitudes were, how I caused Him pain because I asked Him to live in me and then invited guests that He would never choose to spend time with. My heart was broken, my spirit was immobilzed. That day I started a journey of healing in my heart. I'm so much farther down the road now, but still have so far to go. I know you are journeying too. I have journeyed the road of uncertainty, dread, fear and lonliness when we were told Terry was terminal. I love you Connie. My heart is broken for you and Dave and your family. However, I know with no doubt that God is faithful. I am praying, Connie. My worst mistake when dealing with Terry's journey was to isolate myself with the pain and pridefully imagine that I could make the journey alone. The Holy Spirit so often spoke softly to me and encouraged me to find a friend to share my heartache with. I was prideful, I would not follow His prompting. I paid the price by coming to the end of our journey angry and disillutioned with people who wouldn't reach out to me. Then, the Holy Spirit so very gently and quietly said to me "I begged you to reach out; you refused. This is the result of trying to do it all on your own." I cried bitter and agonizing tears and fell on my face in my living room floor and begged God for forgiveness. Since then, I have made a point of reaching out. Some would probably say that I reach too far, share too much, but I don't want to face the Lord again and hear Him reprimand me for not living truthfully with myself. I am here, always. I am praying for you, always. I love you, always. ALWAYS...........

....still shedding some tears here...for Dave's news, for Diane's news....and singing..."...I will rise, on eagle's wings, before my God, fall on my knees and rise...I will rise..." ...and I can hear those angels singing - Worthy is the Lamb!

I am certainly praying for Dave, and for you, Connie. Our God - our faithful, magnificent, all-knowing, all-powerful God...well, none of what happens in our lives ever takes Him by surprise. He never REACTS to our heartache and things of destruction that the enemy of our soul tries to throw our way. Instead, He gently reminds us that in this world, we will have trouble - BUT HE has OVERCOME the world.

Love and hugs...and prayers!

I relate so much to this post, and to each of the comments. Sometimes I think that the emotion to react is stronger in women, maybe it was given by God for motherhood, and to be the care givers we are. The trick is not to over-react, that one I'm still learning!
I continue to pray for Dave, and for you, and I have enjoyed walking in Texas with the sock!
I love you dearly!!!
